Joseph Wood founded the building firm which bore his name and which he developed from small beginnings to a substantial local enterprise. Entering local politics around the year 1855, he served on many Committees; he became Sheriff in 1859 and Mayor in 1860.
He was remembered for his hard work as a City Magistrate which saved the City the cost of employing a stipendiary of £1,000 per year. Alderman Wood died on 5th March 1887 at the age of 91.
The artist Josiah Rushton worked at the Worcester Porcelain Factory from about 1852 – 1871 as a painter of porcelain. He also painted on canvas, particularly reproductions of the work of Gainsborough.
