Thomas Carden moved to Worcester in 1755 and worked for many years as a clothier. He served as a Magistrate and was Governor of the Hopmarket Guardians. He became a Member of the City Corporation and served as Mayor in 1790. On 5th February 1828, the City voted to have his portrait (painted in his 90th year) placed in the Guildhall.
Thomas Carden aroused the admiration of his contemporaries by walking to Birmingham from Worcester at the age of 70. (1738-1836) The artist Richard Evans was a pupil of Sir Thomas Lawrence, whose subjects included the King of Haiti, the Turkish Ambassador, and Harriet Martineau (this last portrait is now in the National Portrait Gallery).
